Freedom Green

A New Freedom Community Park

The Freedom Green is a passive community park accessible to all abilities and age groups. The park an historical landmark located in the center of Historical Downtown New Freedom, at the intersection of Main Street and Railroad Avenue. The property is owned by the New Freedom Borough and is being developed jointly by the Borough and New Freedom Heritage Inc.

Current Uses

Town Mural: The mural is painted on the wall of Marlin’s Auto Center which is adjacent to the Freedom Green. Painted by community volunteers in 2005, the mural depicts one of the trains that
used to run through town with a backdrop of New Freedoms’ historical architecture.

New Freedom Festival: Held one Saturday each year in September, the hub of the festival is at the Freedom Green which houses all day music, a food court and an art tent. Now in its thirteenth year, this large community festival spans the length of Front Street between Main and Penn Street and also includes art, games, contests, community groups and more.

Christmas Tree Lighting: The Freedom Green is the location of the town Christmas Tree. The spruce tree was planted by Crescent Industries. Over the years the New Freedom Lions Club has sponsored a community Christmas tree lighting event the weekend after Thanksgiving at which Santa Claus visits the town’s children. Canned food donations are made to the local food bank and High School music
groups perform.

Town Park: Handicap Accessible Park with passive recreation opportunities such as walking, picnicking, and community gathering and games. Development plans include stream clean up, grading, parking spaces for easy access by seniors and the handicapped as well as pedestrian walking paths in and out of the park and bike racks. Additional park features may include picnic tables, lighting, game tables, trees, gardens etc. The focal point of the park will be a pavilion that is in keeping with the historical nature of the downtown and will be used for entertainment or picnicking.

New Freedom Heritage Museum: This museum is located on the northwest corner of the Freedom Green property. It celebrated its Grand Opening February 4 2012. This Museum serves to present New Freedom’s History and preserve some of the town’s valuable artifacts.
